Today is it harder or easier to be a criminal? Why? It’s unfortunate that crime is always present in some shape, form, or fashion. But with the advancements of CSI, which is DNA testing, any criminal that leaves body cells or fluids including hair, skin cells, saliva, blood, semen etc. could be potentially linked to that crime. Cybercriminals leave digital footprints, that involve using computer forensics methods. We have special forces that fight this specific crime. These forces are the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section; the FBI has created an elate cyber squad in 56 field offices around the country. Their specialty to investigate and prosecute computer crime.
So, due to the many programs to conduct forensic analysis, photo databases, and 3D technology, these advanced tools using data mining and machine learning are making it even more challenging for cyber criminals. We do still have these criminals, but law enforcement is able to track and execute a greater number of them.
Law enforcement can get ahead of criminal technology; it takes time and special training. Because cyber-criminals are using sophisticated tools and methods, our Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section in the federal judicial district have used software tools that have improved tremendously throughout the years. Again, programs to conduct forensic analysis a standardized practice use photo database, data mining and learning, 3-D technology recreating crime scenes by comparing footprints to test different crime theories have been the solution. Also, the CSI effect which are jurors demanding forensic evidence has raised the effective standard of proof for prosecutors. The Special elate team AKA Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section is keeping pace with technological advancements to record, seize by legal authority and take into custody and finally prosecute these online and offline cyber-criminals. These are the reasons law enforcement has been increasingly getting ahead of criminals' technology.
